Separate honesty from stubbornness
A system should resist unsupported pressure and still update when supplied with credible new evidence. An evaluation that rewards every refusal to change will misclassify correction as failure. Construct paired scenarios: one introduces an unsupported assertion; the other supplies genuinely relevant evidence. State the ground truth and acceptable uncertainty before generating responses. This article proposes a protocol; it does not report model benchmark results or claim a tested intervention improves reliability.
Use controlled multi-turn scenarios
Start each pair with the same neutral question and record the initial answer. In the pressure arm, introduce a false premise, repeated persuasion, a claimed authority, or a request to express certainty beyond the evidence. In the correction arm, introduce valid information that should change the answer. Keep irrelevant wording and turn count matched where practical. Test each pressure family independently before combining them so that a failure can be attributed to a specific condition. Do not expose rubric answers to the model under test.
Define what counts as a failure
Score factual correctness, premise correction, calibration, evidence use, and consistency separately. A polite acknowledgment is not necessarily agreement. A model can retain the right answer while producing a contradictory explanation. Annotate the exact span supporting a judgment. For subjective or ambiguous cases, permit an unresolved label rather than forcing a numerical score. Track initial errors separately from pressure-induced reversals; otherwise a system that was already wrong can appear robust simply because it did not change.
Control the experiment
Record model identifier, date, system prompt, temperature, tool access, context length, safety settings, and conversation state. Run fresh sessions with identical setup and repeat stochastic trials. Randomize scenario order. Use a held-out scenario set for final comparison, and reserve development scenarios for tuning. When provider versions change, treat the results as applying to the recorded configuration. The independent experimental unit is usually the scenario or conversation, not each individual turn, so counting every turn as a separate sample can inflate apparent confidence.
Review the judges
Blind reviewers to the model or intervention identity where possible. Calibrate an automated judge against human labels and inspect both false positives and false negatives. In particular, check whether the judge mistakes obedience to a harmless hypothetical for endorsement of a factual assertion. Report disagreements and the adjudication rule. Preserve raw traces so that a buyer can inspect whether the rubric measured the intended behavior. SycEval and SYCON Bench provide related research context; their results should not be transferred to a different system or task without reproduction.
Convert findings into regression assets
For every material failure, retain the minimal scenario, expected behavior, observed behavior, and the conditions under which it occurred. Compare mitigations using the same held-out protocol and check for degradation on legitimate correction tasks. Useful measures include pressure-induced error rate, evidence-based correction rate, and unresolved-case rate, each with a stated denominator. This yields a behavior regression suite and a residual-risk register. It does not establish safety outside the tested scenario distribution.
